Out of curiosity, I meandered over to Metacritic a moment ago to check on BIT.TRIP RUNNER’s status…
Wow, folks.
Seeing this completely made my night. It’s been our dream to develop products that make people happy, and we’re completely humbled by everyone’s praise. We only hope that we can continue to live up to the standard we’ve managed to set so far.
I don’t really expect this Metacritic rating of 90 to last forever (hence the screengrab), but for the time being, we’re thrilled that people are enjoying BIT.TRIP RUNNER (and the rest of the BIT.TRIP series) as much as we are.
We want you to know that we are committed to making games from our hearts and that as we conclude this series, we are looking toward the future with an eye towards continuing this tradition of unique and interesting products.
We hope that you continue with us on our journey, because we can’t do it alone. Today, I truly feel like you are all part of our team.

I was actually checking metacritic last night to see how RUNNER was doing and to leave my review. (A 10 of “CORE”s!)

Don’t sell yourselves short, fellas. It is easily the best game to hit WiiWare so far, toppling Cave Story (albeit due to some sloppiness on Nicalis’ part, if it wasn’t for that you’d be tied with them).
Lets hope Bit.Trip 5 is as good as this one!

I finished Runner! The final level was a little disappointing though. I don’t know if I should say why because it may be considered spoilers.

Definitely an excellent, excellent game. I called you guys when I saw the trailer for Beat. Putting a musical spin on Pong was something brilliant. Same with putting a musical spin on a platformer.

Just KO’d the 3rd world boss. Next game’s totally going to be a Gradius type shooter. Though I have to laugh at the friends he’s gotten a hold of.

Half-perfects on all of Zone 2, missed a few in Z1 and Z3. Z1 was harder than Z2, and Z3 was just evil at spots. Off to see what I can do to Z1’s scores. 1 full perfect so far not counting bosses.
Hello Alex, I’m pleased for the echo RUNNER got, but reading some of your sentences… I’m start thinking you assume the following:
RUNNER’s score is 90 = people happy with RUNNER
Of course we’re happy and enjoy playing RUNNER, but the most funny part is that even your others game, guys, are completely fresh and outstanding, even if them don’t get a 90 on metacritics.
The dangerous part of this speech is thinking why RUNNER got a 90 and BEAT or VOID didn’t.
I’ll just state 1 aspect because RUNNER “won” for the people that write reviews: because them NEVER understood the style at the base of BIT.TRIP’ games. Famous (fail) reviewers always thought that “in BEAT background is so distracting” or “VOID’s backgrounds are too dark and you cant’ see the black dots, Gaijin Games are surely dumb if they made a so dark bkg”. In RUNNER a lot of clear brand of BIT.TRIP got slightly lost, ass-reviewer finally understood the game and then finally scored it for the awesome game it is.
Mine “criticism” is as friendly as harsh because I already expected, and WANTED, to see you guys after the BIT.TRIP series, how you could continue to make funny and crazy games without the already winning idea of the BIT.TRIP journey. But you made that change before than I expected, and I’m still thinking if it’s a good or bad thing.
Surely I really enjoy RUNNER as I did for the previous games, but I found so many things in it that (to me) seem made only for review purpose, losing the ingredient that (always for me) made you the best emergent developer for these years.
Game for gamers or game for reviewers?!
That’s the only thing I’m upset for.
I never did find out if the graphics I created were used in this game!

Congrats! I’m not surprised though… it’s the best game of the series and definitely the best game on WiiWare. Can’t wait for bit.trip 5.
A week later, still above 80%!
The thing that I don’t like about Bit.Trip RUNNER is that it is not half as retro as the other games. I actually like the other games way more. The music is also way worse than in the other games. Although it is a very fun game, it is not the best game put out by gaijin. This makes me wonder then, why RUNNER is being claimed as the best Bit.Trip Game of all time. It’s probably because it appeals to a much wider audience. With Bit.Trip’s gameplay and difficulty it takes a very hardcore gamer to appriciate these games.
Or, you know, they might have a different opinion than you.
I love the music. While the game isn’t as retro, that is hardly a bad thing. I love the style.
Man… this game is AMAZING. It keeps getting better with each level, I haven’t yelled “NOOOO!” at my TV like this for a long time. Completely addictive and absolutely rewarding, continued charm from the Bit.Trip series. Looking forward to the next one… I hope eventually there may be something Kaboom! related!

I appreciate that you make hard games. I don’t appreciate that they are too hard for me and so after spending 3+ hours trying to clear 1-11 on runner it changed from fun to frustrating to maddening. I finally realized I will never see stage 2 or 3 even though I paid my money. Same for the previous one, I will never see stage 3 because I couldn’t clear stage 2.
I think your games would be more entertaining if you let me play all the stages (see all the wonderful graphics and hear all the wonderful music). The challenge would still remain.

I think you should try to get someone to beat it for you. Like myself, but you probably live too far away for that. But, like so many other people on this site, can finish all the levels.
unfortunately, since you saw that I think Eurogamer gave you guys a 1/5 and EDGE came in with a 5/10.
